Description

The freshness and aromatic intensity of a Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé

The estate

A Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé since 2012, Château de Ferrand is a property with unique charm, overlooking the Dordogne Valley. Constructed in 1702, Château de Ferrand boasts a superb architecture in a classical style.

The vineyard

Château de Ferrand 2021 is a Saint-Emilion wine made from a 42-hectare vineyard, of which a 32- hectare single-block vineyard are used for production. The vines are planted at the end of the limestone plateau of Saint-Emilion, on a ledge overlooking the curve of the Dordogne Valley. This location allows for excellent drainage of the soil by runoff, which, combined with an ideal altitude and exposure, helps produce fantastic Saint-Émilion red wines.

The vintage

2021 is the first year of the estate’s conversion to organic farming. Despite the cool and wet winter conditions, budburst was recorded at the end of March, slightly ahead of schedule. The frost at the beginning of April did not affect the estate's vineyards. Although heavy rainfall at the beginning of May, combined with low temperatures, slowed down vegetative development, the high humidity between mid-June and mid-July led to strong mildew pressure, which was kept under control thanks to the château's teams. A dry summer preceded a month of September where the temperature variations between hot days and cool nights were ideal for refining the grape’s ripeness while preserving their freshness and aromatic structure. The grapes are harvested by plot, at optimum maturity and depending on the grape variety.

The blend

Merlot (64%)

Cabernet Franc (35%)

Cabernet Sauvignon (1%).
