Description

A Margaux red wine with a seductive freshness and balance

The estate

An 1855 Fifth Grand Cru Classé of Margaux, Château Dauzac, is one of the estates that have experienced the most significant improvement in quality in recent decades. Thanks to the tireless work carried out both in the vineyard and in the winery, this beautiful estate has become a true emblem of the Margaux appellation.

The vineyard

Château Dauzac 2021 is a Margaux wine that stems from a 42-hectare vineyard. The vines are 35 to 40 years old on average and are planted on outcroppings of deep gravel.

The vintage

A particularly mild and rainy winter favoured an early and even budburst. Due to its proximity to the Gironde estuary, the vineyard was not affected by the spring frost, but cool temperatures slowed down the development of the vine. Although flowering began around May 25th under hot, dry conditions, the heavy rainfall in June led to traces of coulure and millerandage. The cold and wet summer led to an intense mildew pressure, but also to a late veraison due to the lack of sunshine and relatively cool temperatures. The end-of-season was more mild, punctuated by a rainy episode in October, ideal for refining the ripeness levels of the grapes. With its freshness, structure and balance, 2021 is on a par with the fine vintages of the last century.

Vinification and ageing

Hand-picked, the grapes are sorted on a table before and after destemming. Vinification is carried out in a gravity-fed cellars without sulphur, using natural yeasts from the vineyard. The wines are vinified in wooden vats with a transparent dual-stave vat, avoiding pumping the wines to optimise maceration. Malolactic fermentation. Aged in French oak barrels (65% new) for 15 months with racking according according to the tasting.

The blend

Cabernet Sauvignon (70%)

Merlot (30%).

Château Dauzac 2021 is certified 100% vegan.
