Vinum

Rather restrained on the nose, dominated by figs and dates; rich palate, a bit heavy-footed, with an interesting aromatic note of apple pie and cinnamon on the finish.

Decanter

Another excellent Sauternes that would fall into the freshness category, which works better for most people these days, along with botrytis derived black tea and ginger spice. I love the freshness and poise and accompanied by bright orange and touches of white stone fruit on the palate, albeit not as suave as the white apricot expressed in some of the more successful Sauternes tasted. For the price, however, you cannot go wrong! With 148 grams of residual sugar, 4.9 grams per litre of total acidity and 3.85 pH.

Le Figaro Vin

Score: 90–92. Not very expressive, but very classic, with stewed yellow fruit (peach, apricot) and dried pear. The palate is more opulent and creamy. Notes of fresh apricot pulp, Victoria pineapple and fresh hazelnut come through. Delicious, but lacks freshness.

The 2023 D'Arche continues the estate’s upward trajectory observed in recent vintages. Entirely crafted from Sémillon and fermented as well as matured in 50% new oak, it registers 148 grams per liter of residual sugar. The bouquet evokes apricot, exotic fruits, Anjou pear and ripe orchard fruits, articulated with clarity and precision. Medium- to full-bodied, dense and layered, it delivers impressive concentration without excess and is built around a fleshy core of fruit animated by vibrant acidity that carries through to a long, precise and ethereal finish. This is a controlled, finely judged expression of the vintage.

The elegance and richness of a Sauternes wine

The property

Since 1611, the d'Arche family has been rooted in Bordeaux, beginning its wine journey with Etienne d'Arche, regent doctor of the University of Bordeaux. His great-grandson, François d'Arche, Advisor to the King, acquired the Braneyre cru in 1733, renamed Château d'Arche. Despite the upheavals of history, notably the French Revolution, the estate has persisted. In 1855, it was classified as the 2nd grand cru of Gironde's white wines. Under the direction of Armand Bastit-Saint-Martin, mayor of Sauternes, a reunification of the estate was undertaken in 1925. In 1996, a new chapter opened with the purchase of the Château d'Arche, with a vision focused on viticultural excellence and respect for the environment.

The vineyard

Château d’Arche 2023 is a Sauternes wine made from vines averaging 65 years old, resting on soils composed of gravel on a clay subsoil.

The vintage

A warm and humid spring and early summer give way to an August whose relative coolness preserves the acidity and aromatic purity of the berries. If the grapes are fully ripe by the end of August - early September, the alternation of rainy and heatwave episodes as well as the characteristic morning mists of the Sauternes region ensure optimal development of noble rot.

Vinification and aging

Manual harvest in 3 successive tries. Fermentation exclusively in barrels. Aging for 12 months in oak barrels (50% new and 50% of one wine).

Blend

Sémillon (100%).
