Description

A Saint-Emilion red wine with a seductive balance and finesse

The estate

Product of a family know-how and tradition maintained by three generations of winemakers, the wines of Château Clos de Sarpe are known for their very bold identity, which make them some of the best of their appellation. A Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Émilion, Château Clos de Sarpe is in constant search for excellence with each new vintage.

The vineyard

Château Clos de Sarpe 2021 is a Saint-Emilion wine that stems from a certified organic 3.7-hectare vineyard, of which 3.35 are used for production. The vines are 65 years old on average and are planted on the appellation’s famous clay-limestone plateau.

The vintage

Due to its geographical location on the heights of the clay-limestone plateau, the vineyard was not affected by the spring frost. Subsequently, the mildew pressure resulting from an unstable climate was tempered by the rigour and knowledge of the estate's teams. Although the south/south-east exposure and frequent wind protected the grapes from botrytising, the particularly rainy conditions in mid-June disrupted both the development of the grapes and yields. The very mild conditions between the end of September and the beginning of October were ideal for refining the ripeness levels.

Vinification and ageing

Densimetric sorting. Vinification of the Merlot grapes in concrete vats to refine the tannins, and of the Cabernets in 600-litre barrels to give a pleasant roundness. Low temperature alcoholic fermentation. Gentle extraction. Vatting time for 42 days. Aged in barrels (70% new and 30% second-fill). 2021 is the first vintage vinified exclusively by Maylis Marcenat, the niece of Jean-Guy Beyney.

The blend

Merlot (85%)

Cabernet Franc (15%).
