The vivacity and precision of a third wine from Saint-Estèphe
The estate
Calon was the name given to the boat used in the Middle Ages to transport wood from one bank to the other of the Garonne. And at the beginning of the 18th century, the Marquis de Ségur, who received the estate as a wedding gift, added his name to it, thus creating the label of this 3rd grand cru classé from Saint-Estèphe.
The Château Calon Ségur remained in the Capbern-Gasqueton family throughout the 19th century, until 2012, when the property was bought by Suravenir Assurances, which continues to produce wines of Saint-Estèphe in an inimitable style.
Château Calon Ségur has also become famous for its label adorning the bottles of the estate. Since the 18th century, the heart has indeed been the symbol of the property and pays tribute to this phrase of the Marquis de Ségur: "I make wine at Lafite and Latour but my heart is at Calon". For nearly three centuries, lovers of Château Calon Ségur have continued to remain loyal to this iconic property of the appellation.
The vineyard
The vineyard of Château Calon Ségur extends over an area of 50 hectares, of which 48 hectares are in production within the Saint-Estèphe appellation. The vines, averaging 20 years old, are planted on a thick layer of Garonne gravel dating from the Quaternary period, topped by a thin layer of lacustrine clay.
The wine
Formerly named "La Chapelle de Calon" and then "Saint-Estèphe de Calon Ségur", the C de Calon Ségur is the Third Wine of Château Calon Ségur. This cuvée is made exclusively from young vines of merlot and cabernet sauvignon.
Vinification and aging
Hand-harvested, the grapes undergo a first sorting in the vineyard and then in the winery. Vinification in thermo-regulated stainless steel truncated vats. Maceration for 18 to 21 days. Micro-oxygenation. Co-inoculation, exogenous yeasts and bacteria in stainless steel vat at 25°C. The aging lasts about 14 months in three-wine barrels.
Blend
The C de Calon Ségur 2022 is the result of a blend of merlot (84%) and cabernet sauvignon (16%).
