Description

A sensual and elegant Saint-Emilion Premier Grand Cru

The estate

This Premier Grand Cru Classé, Château Angélus, gets its name from the winegrowers who used to simultaneously hear the chimes of the three churches located in the heart of the famous medieval town of Saint-Émilion. This appellation's legendary estate was founded in 1782 and, for 8 generations, the de Boüard de Laforest family has looked after this exceptional heritage on Bordeaux's Right Bank.

The vineyard

Château Angélus is a Saint-Émilion wine that stems from an exceptional terroir, where the vines are grown on Saint-Émilion’s south facing hillside. This terroir spreads over clay-limestone soils in the upper part and clay-sand-limestone soils on the hillside.

The vintage

2016 had an exceptional drought (three months of summer without water. With a beneficial rainfall in mid-September and the most remarkable Indian summer, the Château Angélus team harvested exceptionally ripe grapes from the 4th to the 21st of October.

Blend

Merlot (60%)
Cabernet Franc (40%).

Château Angélus 2016: Characteristics and tasting tips

Tasting

Colour
The colour is a beautiful, very dark inky colour.

Nose
The nose combines sensual and deep fragrances of Lebanese cedar and bitter orange peel with the illusion of freshness and a great tension. When aired, black fruit fragrances (blackberry and blueberry) with a mouth-watering brightness and purity are unveiled in a delicious way, but not excessively so. Breathing in this wine is like biting into a grape. At this stage, the bouquet offers a wide range of aromas. Without giving this wine a good decade to really open up, it is far from fully displaying its richness.

Palate
The attack is precise and dynamic with a meaty, velvety mid-palate on a refined and creamy tannic body. Well-balanced, this wine, with its impressive volume, is already very drinkable. With this superb combination, Château Angélus 2016 joins the category of exceptional wines which offer a great ageing potential.
